AGM X7 - Waiting for a Reasonable Price

Early in its life, the Chinese company AGM surprised fans of rugged smartphones with IP68 water resistance with a number of extremely interesting devices in various price segments. However, the manufacturer was unable to build on its initial success. Even products like the subject of today's review won't help it expand its audience. While it has some originality and distinctiveness, the price-to-quality ratio is far from ideal.

The new product's appearance is quite attractive. While the developer hasn't strayed from the excessive size of the device, with its increased durability and rubberized body, it has also given it a distinctive textured back panel and a beautiful design for the camping flashlight and camera module. It's also easy to spot the cutout for the large speaker, capable of a whopping 5W. There's no stereo sound, but no one will complain about a lack of volume or bass. The exterior also highlights the side-mounted fingerprint scanner. The 6.72-inch IPS panel's bezels are wide, and the image displayed isn't particularly impressive. Content is sharp enough at Full HD+ resolution, and the refresh rate is smooth at 120 Hz. However, the maximum brightness is only 650 nits, typical of low-end devices. Color reproduction is also lackluster compared to AMOLED counterparts.

The technical specifications won't impress modern users either. Of course, the Android 16 interface won't be lagging, thanks to a MediaTek Dimensity 7300 processor, 6 GB of RAM, and a Mali G615MC2 GPU. However, the 650,000-700,000 points in the AnTuTu benchmark suggest that the device isn't powerful enough to handle demanding games with high graphics settings. In Genshin Impact, for example, you need to use low-medium presets for a stable frame rate. The battery has been boosted to 10,000 mAh, so there's no reason to complain about battery life. 15-20 hours of screen-on time will be commonplace. Wired charging isn't impressive (33W), but it now has wireless charging, which is rare in this class of phone. Storage is limited to 256 GB, but there's a microSD card slot.

The photography capabilities of the main 64-megapixel Sony IMX682 camera without optical image stabilization and the 2-megapixel macro camera are limited, but not mediocre. Daytime photos are captured with decent detail, without excessive noise or blur. In the evening, the situation begins to reverse. The high-quality 50-megapixel front-facing camera module is surprisingly good. NFC contactless payments, eSIM support, and 5G network support add to the phablet's list of advantages, but the presence of obvious shortcomings and a less-than-affordable price tag still won't turn the gadget into a future hit.
