HomTom C2 Review: specs and features, camera quality test, gaming benchmark, user opinions and photos
HOMTOM C2 Overview
The lower price segment of the smartphone market is changing for the better every day. This is due both to the gradual technological progress and, as a result, cheaper components, and increasing competition. The struggle for a potential buyer has become really fierce due to the significant number of rivals, as well as the slowdown in the growth rate of the market audience itself. The Chinese company HomTom is far from being a beginner in the production of “smart” phones, so she threw all her strength at analyzing user needs and actions of opponents. Inexpensive HomTom C2, which became the hero of our review, demonstrates how good a modern smartphone model can be at a modest cost.
Acquaintance with the gadget comes from the design of the box and the device configuration The device is packed in a thick cardboard, the design of which evokes pleasant emotions. On the side faces and the front surface you can find photos of the phone itself, behind it is a detailed list of technical specifications. Not only a smartphone, but also a microUSB cable, a transparent silicone case, an OTG cable, a charger (5V 1A) for European outlets, a “opener” for the SIM tray, a protective film on the glass (another on the display of the phone) and user manual, which includes the instruction in Russian. Not every flagship is ready to boast with such a set , for which the company HomTom can only express gratitude and respect.
The appearance of the device is excellent for the lower price segment. Yes, the body is made of polycarbonate, not tempered glass or metal. Yes, the frame below could be less, given the on-screen buttons. However, the combination of dual cameras, a fingerprint scanner, a non-removable rear panel, devoid of backlash and squeaks, virtually frameless on the sides of the screen can hardly be called a failure. The smartphone is doing its best to look like a representative of a medium or even high value category, and he partially does it. “Solid Four” exterior!
Let's talk about the display itself. Installed IPS- panel is ready to boast a 5.5-inch diagonal and a resolution of 1280x640 pixels. With a little stretch, it can be called frameless, since this effect is created by an aspect ratio of 18: 9, not the thickest side frames (3.9 mm). Brightness is high, but direct sunlight reduces image visibility. Unfortunately, although the air gap between the glass and the sensor is small, it negatively affects the comfort of working with the screen on a sunny day. The lower threshold of brightness could be lower. A number of users may experience some discomfort, but there will be no critical problems. The color rendition of the IPS-screen is not perfect. White color goes into warmth, even a slight yellowness. On the other hand, similar shades do not cause eye fatigue. Individual pixels are not visible, the font is clear and legible.
Multitouch phablet just 2 touches . The touch itself is not very responsive, control in games will sometimes be made difficult by the lack of an oleophobic coating both on the already pasted film and on the glass of the screen itself. In the aggregate of the listed facts, the display can be put “four with a minus”.
Phone specifications are fairly standard for the segment. The quad-core Mediatek MT6739 processor is combined with 2GB of RAM and a PowerVR GE8100 video adapter to achieve smoothness of the Android Oreo interface (the bare software version is installed without any changes) and comfortable gameplay in undemanding games. Whether the buyer will arrange such “iron” or not depends largely on the user's previous smartphone. The phone sometimes “thinks”; scrolling the menu can occur with small jerks. After the devices of medium and high price segments such moments are still noticeable. The latest Asphalt 9 in Google Play for the device is not available, which emphasizes the modest gaming component of the gadget. The past part of the game (Asphalt 8) functions more or less smoothly only at the minimum graphics settings, however, the number of frames per second feels around 20-25 frames per second. The picture in this case can hardly be called attractive.
The popular World Of Tanks Blitz operates at low graphics settings and regular (non-HD) textures at 30-40 frames per second with drops to 25 frames. This result is acceptable for a fairly comfortable game.
In the popular benchmark Antutu, the device scored a little more than 38 thousand points. In terms of performance, the smartphone is rather mediocre. However, do not forget about its democratic price. Given this factor, we without a twinge of conscience put the “four with a minus”.
Special thanks to the device should be expressed for the support of 4G . There were no problems with communication. The author of the review used a SIM card from MTS, the reception was plus or minus the same as on ZTE Axon 7, Xiaomi Redmi 4X. The quality of the Internet connection also did not disappoint, but still the smartphone switched from 4G and 3G to 2G more often than the above devices. The volume of conversational dynamics is average, in a noisy environment there is a chance not to hear the interlocutor. Tonal voice is not bad, artifacts are not observed. The microphone is also difficult to subject both to criticism and praise. The interlocutors complained several times about the low loudness of speech, but these moments rarely happened. HomTom gets a “top five with a minus” for its directly “phone” functions.
Of course, in a modern smartphone you want to see a lot of various sensors. The hero of the review is endowed with only a light sensor, proximity and accelerometer. However, all sensors are well calibrated. When you bring the phone to your ear during a conversation, the screen will properly go out, even if not 100% of the time. Auto-brightness usually behaves correctly, in rare moments it lowers the brightness values. The smartphone is perfect for the role of the navigator. In an open area, GPS in a blink of an eye picks up more than 15 satellites, and the room is trying to more or less accurately determine your position. Great result. The fingerprint scanner is not the fastest (it takes almost a second to feel on unlocking), but it is fairly accurate (on average, 9 out of 10 touches are correctly detected). There is support for OTG, it works correctly. The overall rating of the device according to the criterion “Sensors” is 4.
Consider the multimedia component of the device. The device is equipped with one speaker for music playback. Its volume is above average, but the sound quality is frankly mediocre. The lack of bass, “dirty” mids, a slight prevalence of high mid and high frequencies are unlikely to force you to use your smartphone as a speaker. In games, the buyer will often overlap it with his hand because of the not very convenient location. A small but unpleasant minus. The sound in the headphones is standard for the budget segment. The audio codec built into the Mediatek MT6739 processor is clearly not suitable for audiophiles. The sound is flat, the control of the bass is average, which is why bass guitars can break into a hum. The “middle” is sometimes harsh, as are the high frequencies. On the other hand, frankly bad sound is difficult to call, few of the devices up to $ 100 can offer something better. You can store music, movies and other content on a 16GB ROM or microSD cards . A separate slot is not allocated, so for the expansion of memory will have to sacrifice one of the SIM-cards. In the multimedia plan, the smartphone receives from us “four with a minus”.
Photographic capabilities of the device - one of its main trump cards. Usually, in the low price segment, cameras are installed only to seal documents, and even in good light. The main 13 and 2 megapixel modules of the device under review are not like that. During the day, they produce quite nice photos with natural color reproduction. Detailing is average, photos are not without a small amount of noise, but opponents in the price category cannot boast of such results.
Approximate daytime shooting (even close to evening):
Surprisingly, photomodules cope with evening photo shoots. The number of parts is reduced even more, but the pictures do not turn into a “mess” of noise and artifacts. Moving objects are often oiled, apparently due to the long exposure time.
Example of night shooting:
It’s better not to shake your hands when evening shooting. Single LED flash is frankly weak. As a flashlight, it can only be used to highlight very close objects, it does little to cope with its responsibilities.
Photo without flash:
Flash photos:
The front 8-megapixel camera is only suitable for replacing the mirror. Even with good indoor lighting, the resulting self is replete with noises, they are blurry and generally poor quality. In the aggregate of the factors described, the photographic component of the device deserves a “quartet” within the price category.
Snapshot from the front camera:
The autonomy of the gadget raises certain questions. The 3000mAh battery adequately shows itself in games (almost an hour of gameplay in World Of Tanks Blitz, the device lost 22%, which makes it possible to count about 4 hours of resource-intensive games), however, it behaves in an original way during daily work. First, there are drawdowns charge. That is, the device can be held for quite a long time, for example, at 22% of the battery charge, and then drastically fall to 10%. Secondly, in a simple device is discharged stronger than it should have been. During the night without a SIM card and with Wi-Fi turned off, the GPS smartphone lost 5% of its charge, with a SIM card - 7%. Charges the phone long enough, about 3 hours. Thus, according to the considered parameter, with a stretch, HomTom gets “four with a minus”.
As a result, we got a decent smartphone of a low price category, deprived of obvious shortcomings. Let's define the complete list of pros and cons of a gadget:
