Hotwav CYBER 9 Pro Review: specs and features, camera quality test, gaming benchmark, user opinions and photos
HOTWAV Cyber 9 Pro Overview
HOTWAV Cyber 9 Pro - inexpensive, secure and very balanced
Smartphones with increased case strength and moisture protection have not lost their popularity and relevance in recent years. Moreover, the technological process allowed to significantly expand the functionality of such devices even in the low price segment of the market. Fits this description and the hero of today's review from the Chinese company HOTWAV, which is also trying to combine good performance and excellent autonomy. But is everything perfect for such an ambitious novelty?
Acquaintance with the phone always begins with its configuration. Behind a thick black cardboard box, not only the device itself is hidden, but also a 10W charger, a USB Type-C cable, an adapter from USB Type-C to 3.5mm, a needle for the SIM card tray. There is no protective silicone case, but is it needed for a gadget with IP68 protection? Hardly. But on the display there is a film that can protect the device from scratches at first. Unfortunately, there is no oleophobic coating on it.
The first impression of the considered Android-smartphone is quite positive. Of course, the weight of the phablet at 337 grams is instantly felt, and it’s not easy to wrap your hand around a monoblock with dimensions of 168 x 82 x 16 mm. However, the abundance of metal-styled elements, a rubberized back panel with a creative texture and the same edging, a triple camera recessed into the body and a plug at the USB Type-C output make it clear that we are dealing with a modern phone. The bezels of the 6.3-inch display are more than noticeable, but opponents in the price category cannot boast of anything else. But to manage such a large gadget with one hand is hard. In addition, an additional button on the left side, to which you can assign any action, is often lived by accident due to not the best location.
The screen itself turned out to be quite good, but not without flaws. To the obvious advantages of the IPS-panel, I would like to record a quite decent margin of brightness, a surprisingly correct white balance and, in general, close to realistic color reproduction. But it's hard not to notice the sometimes insufficient color contrast, the lack of an increased image refresh rate and, of course, the low resolution of 1520x720 pixels. They can be seen with the naked eye if desired, the division of the image into many vertical stripes is especially noticeable. However, the clarity of the fonts is still preserved, and the above problem manifests itself only when carefully examining the IPS display from a fairly close distance. Another justification for the HD+ resolution is the reduction in screen power consumption, which has made the Android smartphone's battery life extremely impressive. But we'll talk about it a little later. The direct rays of the sun, of course, almost completely deprive the picture of visibility, but few IPS screens are free from such a problem.
Specifications are represented by a MediaTek Helio P60 processor, 8GB of RAM and a Mali G72MP3 graphics accelerator. The age of the CPU is quite large, but within the low-mid price segment, the bundle is still relevant. Firstly, the performance of the solution is higher than the most budget chips Helio G25, G35, and even more so Helio A22, P22 from the same developer. In the Antutu benchmark, the device scores 225686 points, the Android 11 interface is responsive in most cases and does not irritate with microlags. Only occasionally does a smartphone “think” for 1-2 seconds when opening heavy web pages or resource-intensive applications. Secondly, a long gameplay does not lead to significant heating of the device and serious throttling. For example, a 20-minute CPU Throttling Test resulted in only a 25% loss in CPU power. Thirdly, gamers still will not be left without modern games. To test the capabilities of the CPU, one of the most resource-intensive projects to date was chosen, namely the popular Genshin Impact. At the minimum graphics settings, the gameplay was quite smooth and showed a frame rate in the region of 20-25 fps with some friezes every 20-30 seconds. The result may not seem so impressive, but it is more than good for an inexpensive smartphone with moisture protection. Of course, the less demanding PUBG, Call Of Duty and World Of Tanks will run without any problems at higher graphics presets.
The chipset does not suffer from excessive power consumption, which, together with the 7500mAh battery, testifies to the excellent autonomy of the device. During an hour of playing Genshin Impact, the smartphone lost 14% of its battery charge, and during the night the phone spent 3% of the charge being with one SIM card and WiFi connection turned on. As for normal use, the device offers almost three days of work with 9 hours of active screen time. It should be noted that this period of time included over an hour of Genshin Impact gameplay. But what is disappointing is the battery charging speed. Power in 18W is frankly not enough for an impressive capacity of 7500mAh. If the battery gains the first 50% in about 1 hour 25 minutes, then 100% can be seen only after 4 hours 45 minutes.
The internal storage size was 128GB, which is quite a lot for an Android smartphone at a reasonable price. At the same time, one of the SIM cards can be changed to a MicroSD card, which completely closes the issue of a potential lack of memory. The device runs Android 11 without any branded skins. The system is stable, no reboots or serious bugs were found during the use of the phablet. However, there are still minor flaws, namely, words and phrases not translated into Russian in some applications (for example, the Camera application) and menu items. Fortunately, they don't occur very often.
Let's analyze the sound of the gadget. Unfortunately, the developer did not provide a separate headphone jack, so you will either have to use an adapter to USB Type-C, since it is included in the kit, or wireless analogues. Testing took place with Mifo O5 II Gen 2 and Mifo O7 Carbon wireless headphones. The sound is simpler than that of more expensive smartphones like OnePlus 9RT (Qualcomm Snapdragon 888) and Realme GT Neo (Mediatek Dimensity 1200), but the difference can only be detected by direct comparison, and it is heard rather in the nature of high frequencies. The cymbals are slightly more intrusive, less detailed, in complex or mediocre compositions like Korn - Forgotten, Vola - Stray The Skies, the sound sometimes approaches the concept of “porridge”, although it does not cross the line. There were no problems with the Bluetooth connection. The only speaker does not upset with volume, but its frequency response is peculiar. In general, at volumes up to 50%, the sound is dark and clamped, which is why vocals in music or videos sound slightly nasal. On the other hand, there is no irritation due to an excess of high and high frequencies. Above 50-60% of the volume, the sound deteriorates noticeably, but at the same time, you definitely won’t miss the right call.
Speaker quality for calls is average, but far from bad. The volume is enough with a margin, the author of the review personally set 80%. The voice of the person on the other end of the tube is easy to recognize, although it sounds a little muffled. 4G connection (Internet) is still inferior to that of mid-range and high-end smartphones. Where the OnePlus 9RT was stable on 4G+, HOTWAV occasionally switched to H+. On the other hand, such moments were quite rare, there were no cardinal problems with the Internet connection. WIFI, Bluetooth worked perfectly, there was no interruption in connection with the headphones. The operation of NFC was checked using the MirPAY application, the payment in the hypermarket was successful.
The photo capabilities of the main cameras in general do not disappoint. These are budget sensors, led by a 48-megapixel Samsung GM1 sensor that can handle daylight shooting. Of course, it's hard not to notice some problems with detail and dynamic range, but most protected opponents with a similar price tag can not boast of such results. Unfortunately, cameras often make mistakes in exposure, which is why it has to be somewhat underestimated. Disabling HDR partially helps in this situation. Evening shots lose even more detail, but the combination of LED flash and straight arms still helps to get relatively high-quality photos. The footage is recorded in FullHD resolution, there is even electronic stabilization. However, not everything is so clear. The shaking partially disappears, however, with a serious change in lighting, the frame rate sags, at these moments the loss of detail is also noticeable. Thus, cameras are quite suitable for capturing daytime photos, but for high-quality evening shooting, you need to focus on a completely different price segment.
As a result, the gadget made a very positive impression, given its price tag. This is a functional, durable, autonomous and more than relevant device for all fans of brutal smartphones with protection against moisture and dust according to IP68 standards. Let's summarize and list the main advantages and disadvantages of the phone.
Advantages:
- Good equipment;
- Protection against dust and moisture according to IP68 standards;
- Good technical specifications for the price segment in the form of a MediaTek Helio P60 processor and 8GB of RAM;
- 128GB of ROM, expandable with MicroSD cards;
- The ability to create good daytime shots using the main cameras;
- Support for NFC contactless payments;
- The 7500mAh battery provides autonomy in the region of three days of work with the device.
Flaws:
- Huge body size and mediocre ergonomics;
- Low display resolution;
- Lack of headphone jack and stereo sound;
- Evening shots taken by cameras are often only upsetting;
- Untranslated menu and application lines;
- Slow battery charging.
The final score of the smartphone is 7.5 points out of 10.
