Hotwav T5 Max Review: specs and features, camera quality test, gaming benchmark, user opinions and photos
HOTWAV T5 Max Overview
HOTWAV T5 Max - ruggedness and functionality without the need for investment
Today's smartphone market is developing at a really fast pace. Every year, mobile assistants get new features, become more productive, more autonomous, and more affordable. A significant number of fans have and phones with high durability and protection from dust and moisture. And if a few years ago the price tag of such gadgets has always been a few tens of thousands of rubles, today the device with IP68-protection are much cheaper. HOTWAV T5 Max is one of the best representatives of inexpensive smartphones with enhanced durability in the low price segment. To prove this statement the gadget will try in our review.
The package of the device is not the most impressive, but it is extremely difficult to complain about the quality of components or packaging. A stylish orange box made of thick cardboard not only shows some of the technical specifications, but it also has the smartphone itself, a 10W charger (2A 5V), a USB Type-C cable and a needle for SIM-card removal. If the lack of a silicone case can be easily explained by the durability of the device, as well as the already large size of the device, the lack of a protective film in the kit is slightly disappointing. But given the current trend to deprive many phones of even a charger, it is hardly necessary to complain about such little things.
Fans of large, brutal smartphones will be crazy about this novelty. The large rubberized casing fits perfectly in a man's palm, the fingerprint scanner on the back panel fits comfortably under the index finger of the hand. Beautiful turned out and camera unit, located next to the fingerprint scanner. It has a barely noticeable microphone hole. The front panel leaves less positive emotions because of the extremely large frame of the display. It is also unlikely that someone will like the thickness of the phablet, but it was possible to achieve increased durability and protection from moisture and dust due to the increased size. On the left side is a hybrid tray for SIM cards, protected by a rubber cover. It also hides the jack for wired headphones, already located on top. The right side of the device is not only decorated with the label SHOCKPROOF, but also has a power and volume buttons. On the bottom there is also a water and dust-proof USB Type-C connector and an outlet for another microphone. So, the design is not perfect, but will definitely appeal to fans of such gadgets.
The 6-inch IPS display has a number of pluses and minuses. To the first it is easy to attribute a good reserve of brightness, pleasant color rendering with a slight bend in warmth, to the second - a modest resolution of 960 x 480 pixels. Small fonts and icons look a little blurry, but the final situation is far from critical. If you do not compare the displayed picture with that of more expensive smartphones, the discomfort with the installed IPS-screen is not experienced. Another incentive for the use of such a display could be a desire to increase the autonomy of the device. We will talk about it a little later. Oleophobic coating of glass is absent, but such things are usually the privilege of smartphones in the middle and upper price segments. At angles of view the image loses brightness, there are no strong distortions, but the white balance changes. When you tilt down or to the right, the picture gets warmer, goes to the yellow shade, when you tilt left or up - the colors become noticeably cooler. Auto-brightness is present, and it really works. Of course, there is a lag of a few seconds when there is a sudden change in lighting, but even the displays of flagship smartphones often have this feature. As a result, the screen does not cause negative emotions and can upset only a few mediocre image clarity.
The device is based on Android 13 without much change of the shell from the manufacturer. This fact has a positive effect on the rendering speed of the interface. And not the most productive technical characteristics in the form of the processor MediaTek Helio A22, 4gb RAM and graphics gas pedal PowerVR GE8320 should definitely express their gratitude. Let's consider the results of the bundle in synthetic tests.
In the AnTuTu v9.5.6 benchmark, the smartphone scores 93984 points.
In the benchmark Geekbench 6 device got 189 points in the single-core test and 511 points in the multi-core test.
The CPU Throttling Test (100 threads, 30 minutes) does not show the highest, but extremely stable results of 62.28GIPS. No performance degradation due to trotting is observed, and there is practically no case heating.
From the demanding games we tested popular PUBG Mobile and Call Of Duty Mobile. The first project feels good at low graphics settings. Framerate drops in the open area are present, but they are not critical and do not interfere with gameplay. Freezes are virtually absent, they occur only once every couple of minutes when loading a large part of the location.
The situation with Call Of Duty is better. Get a comfortable gameplay on low graphics settings is quite possible, the average number of frames per second is felt above the cherished 30. Tense battle scenes with the interaction of 5 or more opponents sometimes cause freezes, which is not entirely pleasant, but these situations are rare.
As a result, the gadget is far from the title of a gaming smartphone. To run the majority of two-dimensional games and undemanding three-dimensional projects will work, but about more modern Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail and similar titlo have to forget.
As for the daily work with the device, the interface is not replete with lags, but the applications are not launched instantly.
The 6050mAh battery does not set a battery life record, but you don't have to worry about constantly searching for outlets or pawerbanks. In everyday use (web surfing, messengers, calls, using Wi-Fi and 4G in a 1:1 ratio) the battery demonstrates about 7-8 hours of active screen time with a day and a half of interaction with the smartphone. Benchmark PCMark Work 3.0 Battery Test when tested from 80 to 20% battery capacity gives a result of 10 hours 33 minutes (about 14 hours when tested from 100% to 20% capacity). But there is a spoonful of tar in the barrel of honey. The 10W charger power is not a hint but a direct statement about the long charge time of the device. The device will have to stay at the socket for about 3 hours, which is unlikely to be appreciated by the buyer.
There is only one speaker for sound reproduction. It is hardly possible to criticize it, given the price category of the smartphone. The volume is enough not to miss a call, listening to voice messages and similar content also goes without any problems. Unfortunately, the lack of bass and an abundance of mid-range frequencies in the AFC will not allow you to enjoy your favorite music or watch movies in company. HOTWAV has a separate jack for wired headphones, the sound of the tested set of earmuffs for Oppo Reno 2 and Simgot EN700 MK2 slightly easier than that of a smartphone Realme GT2 and OnePlus 9RT. This fact is audible by less detailed high frequencies and more blurred low frequencies. Wireless sound was tested with the Mifo O5 II Gen 2 headphones. Here the difference between the device in question and more expensive smartphones is stronger due to the lack of AptX support. SBC and AAC codecs are simpler in the nature of high frequencies, they slightly lack airiness and layering. Also, the volume reserve is a couple of divisions smaller.
Daytime photos:
Photos at dusk and evening photos:
Photo capabilities of 13- and 0.3-megapixel main cameras are surprisingly good for an inexpensive smartphone with moisture protection. During daytime shooting, it is quite possible to get a detailed frame with close to realistic color reproduction, but often you have to manually set the exposure due to over-lit sky or, conversely, too darkened objects on the ground. Blamed for such problems and not particularly wide dynamic range cameras. What is more surprising is the ability to create frames in the evening. Of course, for a good picture will have to make a few takes, but with the correct setting of the exposure can be quite good. It is not recommended to record video files on the phone. There is no electronic stabilization, even with minor problems with lighting noises appear. Front 5-megapixel camera is very simple, relatively good selfies can make only on a sunny day.
Fornt camera:
The quality of communication in HOTWAV T5 Max is good, the speech of the interlocutor is transmitted without distortion, the voice is easy to recognize. No complaints about the work of the microphone people on the other side of the wire were not observed. Internet connection is not weaker than that of Realme GT2 and OnePlus 9RT. Only occasionally the phone switched to a 3G-connection, where the mentioned devices retained 4G-Internet. However, such cases were infrequent. But Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are more modest. Wi-Fi at 5-6 meters from the signal source and two walls was practically inoperable, the Mifo O5 II Gen 2 headphones also lost connection earlier than it happened with the smartphones from Realme and OnePlus. However, if we take into account the significant difference in the price of the devices, we can close our eyes to these shortcomings.
The GPS performance does not disappoint. Even indoors the device freely found about 50 satellites, connected in 20-22 of them and provided decent accuracy of +- 3 meters. In the open area the result is better, the number of used satellites increased to 23-27, the accuracy of measurements increased.
For data security in the smartphone is responsible for unlocking by face with the front camera and fingerprint sensor, located on the back panel. It is sunk inside by a millimeter and, unfortunately, it is sometimes not so easy to feel with the index finger. However, in 9 out of 10 cases it recognizes fingerprints correctly. In good light, you can also use the FaceID counterpart.
Let's list the main pros and cons of the smartphone and summarize the review.
Advantages:
- low price;
- Protection against dust and moisture according to IP68 standards;
- The brightness of the display is above average for the price segment;
- A high-capacity battery of 6050mAh;
- Support for contactless payment NFC;
- 4GB RAM, 64GB ROM with the possibility of expansion;
- Stable connection, no problems with WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth;
- main camera is capable of high-quality daytime shots;
- availability of a fingerprint scanner and a separate headphone jack;
- Android 13 without unnecessary add-ons.
Disadvantages:
- low display resolution;
- MediaTek Helio A22 processor is not the best solution in the price segment;
- Over-sized housing and, consequently, mediocre ergonomics;
- not a good location of the fingerprint scanner;
- mono sound;
- slow charging speed.
Thus, the HOTWAV T5 Max smartphone will suit those users who for a small amount of money want a rugged, long-lasting phone endowed with more than basic functionality. It is far from the best device in terms of display quality and performance, but within its price segment it is more than competitive.
