Hotwav W11 Review: specs and features, camera quality test, gaming benchmark, user opinions and photos
HOTWAV W11 Overview
HOTWAV W11 - unexpectedly good
You rarely expect a sea of positive emotions from secure smartphones at the border of the low and middle price segments. For the sake of increased phone durability, the manufacturer has to make serious compromises. The quality of the display, the autonomy, the functionality, and the photo capabilities come under the knife. But the Chinese company HOTWAV managed to avoid serious simplifications when creating the hero of today's review. This is why HOTWAV W11 looks advantageous against many opponents.
Brief characteristics of HOTWAV W11:
- case materials: front panel - glass, back panel - plastic;
- screen: IPS technology, 6.6 inches diagonal, resolution 2460x1080 pixels;
- processor: MediaTek MT8788V, video chip: Mali-G72 MP3;
- RAM/ROM: 6GB / 256GB;
- operating system: Android 13;
- battery: 20800mAh, 33W charger;
- main camera: 64MP main Sony IMX686 + 24MP night vision module;
- front camera: 16MP Samsung SK53P3;
- sound: mono speaker;
- navigation: GPS/GLONASS/Beidou/Galileo;
- dimensions and weight: 176.6 x 84.8 x 26.5 mm, 560g.
Начнем рассмотрение девайса с его комплектации. Черная коробка из стилизованного под кожу черного картона содержит в себе не только героя обзора, но и:
- зарядное устройство мощностью в 30W;
- кабель USB Type-C на USB Type-C;
- OTG-кабель;
- скрепка для SIM-лотка;
- инструкция пользователя.
Конечно, это далеко не самый обширный комплект, но от недорогого устройства сложно ожидать большего. Тем более, что качество самих аксессуаров находится на высоком уровне исполнения.
The design of HOTWAV W11 will definitely appeal to fans of large, brutal smartphones. The rubberized case is ready to please with the original block of photomodules, a huge LED flashlight located next to it, a pleasant to the touch corrugated texture of the rear panel, and stylized metal side edges. The device could not do without a fingerprint scanner, which is located in the power button. Of course, with all that has been said above, the appearance of the device is far from ideal. The weight exceeds 500 grams, which negatively affects ergonomics, the display frames are wide, and the design of the selfie camera is frankly outdated. However, it is necessary to understand that we are dealing with extremely long-lasting secure phones at an affordable price, which explains the mentioned shortcomings. The top edge has only a hole for the microphone. On the right, the user will find the power button and volume buttons. At the bottom of the smartphone it is easy to find another microphone output and a USB Type-C port covered with a plug. The left side has a SIM card slot closed behind a flap and a multifunctional additional button, made in red. Thus, we have before us a durable monolithic device that does not cause any complaints in terms of assembly, and the exterior turned out to be quite good.
The large 6.6-inch display is made using IPS technology. It's nice to know that the developers of HOTWAV W11 did not skimp on the quality of the screen used. Firstly, the IPS panel received an optimal diagonal resolution of 2460x1080 pixels. Pixels cannot be detected with the naked eye, small fonts are clear. Secondly, there is auto-brightness, it works correctly in the vast majority of cases. Thirdly, the color rendition is quite natural, there is a slight shift towards warmth, long work with the mobile assistant did not bring any discomfort to the eyes. Fourthly, the image is not distorted at tilt angles, and it does not lose too much brightness. As for the maximum brightness reserve, it is, surprisingly, enough to work with the device during the day, although not on the sunny day. In summer, it is better for the user to look for shade, but opponents are usually not able to boast with such achievements. As for the disadvantages, we include the standard 60 Hz picture refresh rate, as well as the lack of an oleophobic coating.
Let's take a closer look at the HOTWAV W11 operating system. The device runs on Android 13 without any significant modifications from the manufacturer. On the one hand, the interface is not endowed with any special beauty or individuality, on the other hand, the shell works quickly, and stutters are rare. The translation is approximately 95 percent complete; only rare submenus in the Settings application remain in English. While using the device, it received a couple of small OTA software updates that improve stability. Thus, the manufacturer does not forget about supporting the released device, which is definitely pleasing.
The technical characteristics of the smartphone are the MediaTek MT8788 processor, 6GB of RAM and the Mali G72MP3 video accelerator. The architecture of the chipset is similar to the Helio P60 model, so the level of performance will be standard for the price category. Let's start with the results of synthetic tests.
In AnTuTu Benchmark V10.2.5, HOTWAV W11 scored 249074 points.
Geekbench 6 achieved a single-core score of 329 and a multi-core score of 1,273.
However, for many users, the level of CPU performance in gaming applications will be much more important.
PUBG Mobile today can no longer be considered one of the most resource-intensive projects, however, the impressive range of drawing locations, coupled with decent detail of objects and character models, still require considerable computing power. The phone in question coped with the “Balance” graphics preset and average frame rate without any difficulty. The gameplay is smooth, there were practically no stutters or stutters.
Tank Company is a much more modern and demanding game. In fact, the project is an adapted copy of the full-fledged World Of Tanks for personal computers, which can be seen not only by the scale of the battles (15 vs 15 tank battles), but also by the structure of many maps. The game automatically sets low graphics settings, at which HOTWAV W11 produces a quite stable 30 frames per second with rare drops to 22-25 frames. The gameplay is smooth, pleasant and comfortable to play.
But Genshin Impact is already conquering the device with great difficulties. One of the most resource-intensive games at low graphics settings produces a not very stable 20-25 frames per second with drops to 15 in locations with a large number of objects. This, for example, is the city of Monstadt. You can play, but the pleasure due to the stuttering is far from the maximum possible.
The device has 256GB of permanent memory in UFS 2.1 format, which can definitely be considered a competitive advantage. Opponents usually have half the amount of ROM. There is a slot for MicroSD cards, but if you use it you will have to sacrifice one of the SIM cards.
What pleasantly surprises you about the HOTWAV W11 is its photo capabilities. The 24-megapixel monochrome night vision sensor is quite functional, but it will be useful to a small number of people. Perhaps this function will be useful when hunting, but for most users it is just entertainment for a few hours. But the main 64-megapixel Sony IMX686 sensor will definitely not leave you without high-quality images. Daytime shots are quite pleasing with detail and color rendition, focusing is fast and almost error-free. This is a level of photography that is significantly superior to budget 48 and 50 megapixel modules usually installed in rugged smartphones in the price category. Evening shooting is unlikely to cause a lot of positive emotions, but with the help of a powerful LED flash the result can be significantly improved. Below are examples of photographs with normal, high-powered flash, and without.

Night photography with regular flash:
Night photography with boosted flash:

The autonomy of the HOTWAV W11 is definitely one of the main competitive advantages of the phone thanks to its huge 20800mAh battery. With fairly active use (downloading many applications, gameplay in the previously mentioned games, watching videos, etc.), the device functioned for more than five days. Let's move on to more precise numbers:
- approximately 12 hours of gameplay in Genshin Impact (battery lost 8% per hour);
- approximately 12 hours of gameplay in Tank Company (battery lost 8% per hour);
- approximately 14 hours of gameplay in PUBG Mobile (battery lost 7% per hour);
- approximately 20 hours of screen time per day with active use (25% of the time - games, 75% of the time - web surfing and other activities).
The included 33W charger charges the smartphone from 0% to 100% in about eight and a half hours, so it’s best to leave the HOTWAV W11 at a power outlet all night.
The PCMarkWork 3.0 benchmark did not work on the sample in question. Unfortunately, the program is quite capricious; this is not the first time it has demonstrated such behavior.
The quality of communication did not cause any complaints. Speech transmission is still not as clear as on more expensive phones without full moisture protection (Realme GT2, OnePlus 9RT), but the timbre of the interlocutor’s voice is easy to guess, there are no distortions or artifacts. The earpiece is loud; about 70% volume is enough for comfortable use. The interlocutors had no complaints about the microphones; noise reduction when talking near the highway worked well, although not at all ideal. The Internet connection is good, the modem from MediaTek does not fail, the phone as a whole is not inferior in 4G reception to the devices mentioned earlier. WiFi is also decent, the Internet continued to work through 2 walls and 5-7 meters from the signal source.
The GPS connection is problematic. HOTWAV W11 can potentially be used as a GPS navigator, but you shouldn’t hope for perfect location determination without errors. The GPS Test essentially failed, and although Google Maps works, the error is significant. In addition, the mount of the phone in a car or on a bicycle must be of really high quality, taking into account the weight of the device.
Let's move on to the sound. The only speaker responsible for it is one that does not amaze with its volume or balanced frequency response. The maximum volume of approximately 83-84dB may not be sufficient in noisy places. There is little bass, high frequencies are also lacking, as a result, we have a sound like “from a barrel”. There is no jack for wired headphones, but the device supports LDAC, which will have a positive effect on the sound of modern TWS headsets. There is no support for AptX codecs. The device was more than friendly with the Anker Soundcore Liberty 4 NC headphones; there were no noticeable differences in sound compared to the Realme GT2.
Let's list all the pros and cons of HOTWAV W11.
Advantages:
- moisture protection according to IP68 standards;
- high-quality IPS display;
- good technical characteristics for the price category;
- high-quality main 64-megapixel photo module;
- monochrome photo module for night photography;
- a powerful LED on the rear panel that can replace a flashlight;
- NFC support;
- fantastic autonomy provided by a battery of more than 20,000 mAh;
- good communication reception;
- no problems with GPS navigation;
- reasonable price.
Flaws:
- The design of the phone is missing stars from the sky;
- poor ergonomics due to moisture protection and a capacious battery;
- mediocre main speaker;
- The charger's power of 33W is still not enough to charge a smartphone at least relatively quickly.
As a result, we have an extremely autonomous and durable smartphone that does not disappoint in terms of functionality and photo capabilities. HOTWAV W11 is an excellent purchase option for a man who prefers an active lifestyle. Poor ergonomics and a number of minor disadvantages are not able to spoil the impression of the abundance of competitive advantages of the phone.
