Realme Note 50 - expectations remained unjustified

The Chinese company Realme, unexpectedly for many of its fans, decided to announce a new Note line of smartphones with large displays. However, its first representative, aimed at the low price segment, turned out to be not as wonderful as the manufacturer’s fans would like. The hero of this review has problems in almost every aspect.

The appearance of the new product turned out to be competitive. The only question that raises questions is the design of the 5-megapixel selfie camera, which came straight into 2019. A side-mounted fingerprint scanner, an original solution with a textured rear panel, a beautiful two-camera unit and relatively thin screen frames create an exterior that is quite pleasing to the eye. The 6.74-inch IPS display evokes less clear emotions. With a resolution of 1640x720 pixels, the IPS panel is critically lacking in image clarity; small fonts and icons look blurry. The smoothness of the image at a refresh rate of 90Hz is high, the maximum brightness level reaches a good 600 nits. In direct sunlight, partial visibility of the content is maintained.

The technical characteristics chosen were the Unisoc Tiger T612 CPU, 4GB of RAM and the Mali G57 MC1 video adapter. This combination allows the Android 13 operating system not to be riddled with lags, but you shouldn’t count on the chipset’s impressive gaming capabilities. Performance of approximately 220 thousand points in the AnTuTu benchmark means a stable frame rate in undemanding games like PUBG Mobile, but trying to run the same resource-intensive Genshin Impact is not recommended. The gameplay will be more like a slideshow. But the processor is energy efficient, so you can expect up to 9-10 hours of active screen time from a 5000mAh battery. The size of the permanent memory can be 64 or 128GB of ROM, there is a separate slot for MicroSD cards.

Where the developer really saved money was in the area of the gadget’s photo capabilities. The 13- and 2-megapixel main photo modules, even in daylight, disappoint with poor image detail and problems with their color rendition. Perhaps there is no need to give them tasks more complicated than capturing documents. The only speaker is not amazingly loud, but you can at least enjoy your favorite music through wired headphones. But for some reason, NFC contactless payments, which are important for many modern users, are missing. Thus, we are definitely not looking at the most balanced device, which has many worthy and sometimes even more interesting opponents.
