Motorola Razr 70 Ultra – technologically advanced and completely unnecessary?

Folding smartphones are gradually transforming from rare and expensive pieces of mobile electronics into a familiar and beloved format for those with a reasonable budget. Over time, their inherent shortcomings fade, and the list of gadgets' competitive advantages grows. Unfortunately, today's review subject, from the Chinese company Motorola, doesn't quite fit this description. It's not much different from its predecessor, is quite expensive for its technical specifications, and even has a number of obvious flaws.

The new device's appearance is definitely one of its strong points. Several ergonomic and stylish textures on the back panels and original colors, a convenient side-mounted fingerprint scanner, thin bezels on both screens, and a dual-camera module located literally in the display make an extremely positive impression. However, for some reason, it lacks full IP68 water resistance. Both the secondary 4-inch (1272x1080 pixels) and main 7-inch (2992x1224 pixels) AMOLED panels deliver stunning image clarity, combined with a flagship 165Hz refresh rate, natural color reproduction, and a huge peak brightness (over 5000 nits).

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite processor is no longer the manufacturer's top-of-the-line solution, but it's still adequate for running the Android 16 interface and more demanding tasks. The chipset, coupled with 16GB of RAM and an Adreno 830 GPU, scores nearly three million points in AnTuTu and is capable of handling games like Genshin Impact or Fortnite at maximum graphics settings. However, the not-so-effective cooling system still causes the phablet to overheat and throttle, albeit not critically. Battery life is unimpressive. The 5000mAh battery lasts a day or so, but it does offer both 30W wireless charging and a 68W wired charger. The storage is 512GB, with no microSD card slot.

Now we come to the photography capabilities, which aren't particularly outstanding. There's no telephoto lens, and hybrid stabilization is only available on the main 50MP sensor, not the wide-angle 50MP lens. While you can certainly take good evening photos without excessive noise or blur, the level of detail is far from that of a proper camera phone. Stereo sound, however, is loud, rich, and without any significant dips in the frequency response. Support for eSIM, NFC contactless payments, and 5G networks round out the gadget's list of advantages, but given its hefty price tag, it still proves controversial and unconventional.
